Can you dig an underground shelter through caliche?

Yes. Caliche — the pale, cemented calcium-carbonate hardpan under much of the Big Country — is the reason West Texas fence posts get set with a breaker bar, but it is routine work for an excavator with the right attachment. What caliche changes is the effort and therefore sometimes the price, not the feasibility. The site visit establishes what is actually under your lot before any number is quoted.

Do underground shelters flood out here?

Far less than in wetter states, and it would be dishonest to import that fear wholesale — the Big Country is dry country. But West Texas rain arrives in bursts, expansive clay sheds water sideways, and a shelter set at the low point of a lot with no drainage detail can still take on water in a spring storm. How deep does it go?

What about getting out if debris covers the lid?
